BaseAlpine is about providing New Zealand adventurers with the resources they need to enjoy our natural environments in a sustainable way.
Our vision was born through a love for kiwi climbing, an appreciation of the beautiful environment we live in and a desire to share this with other like-minded people. Bouldering is a passion of ours is a great opportunity to hang out with friends, laze about in beautiful weather and - on occasion - push yourself on some gravity defying problems! Our guiding values are Life - Adventure - Experience.
Life is defined by those moments of dedication, belief and pure joy. We've found bouldering a great vehicle to create these moments. Governed only by the strength of your mind and body - anything is possible.
Adventure is the keystone of development - with an unknown outcome, relying on instinct and intuition to guide the way. Chalk up, shake out, reach for the start hold and pull on... Don’t think, just go, trust in the process.
Experience is the sum of our learnings and it shapes our directions in the future. We can integrate the wisdom around us into our climbing and minimise our impact, ensuring places like Castle Hill remain open and accessible for generations of future climbers.
BaseAlpine was created in 2004 in the Victorian Highlands of Australia. Drew and Marty offered ski-touring experiences from Mt Buller to local mountain huts and abseil rigging for multi-sport events. Across the Tasman BaseAlpine has morphed into supported bouldering adventures with plans to expand to camping accessories in the near future.
Drew started climbing in the mid 90’s and has been fortunate enough to have climbed and bouldered throughout Australia, Wales, Spain, France and NZ. He first climbed at Castle Hill in the summer of 03-04 and immediately fell in love with the beauty of the place. Drew has noticed the impact of climbers and tourists at the Hill and is motivated to encourage and educate people to enjoy the area while conserving its ecology in a low impact and responsible way.
Trudie has been a recreational climber for a number of years and was especially taken by the sport of bouldering when visiting Fontainebleau in France a few years ago. She has since been inspired to take it up more energetically and start the collection of boulder mats that BaseAlpine has inherited. Motivated by the fun and satisfaction of bouldering, she hopes you will get out there and give it a shot too.
